Modular, Low-Cost Tracking Systems
University of Cambridge

Introduction to the Problem

The design and development of tracking systems vary widely to meet diverse requirements, considering factors such as tracking accuracy, measurement regions, system integration and implementation costs. Building and deploying an effective tracking system is a significant challenge, requiring expertise in selecting appropriate tracking technologies, extensive effort in system development and a thorough understanding of how to integrate with manufacturing processes. Only companies that successfully integrate tracking systems into their operations can fully realise the associated business benefits. However, most tracking systems are highly customised and there is no clear framework to guide companies in selecting and building tracking systems for their factories. This is especially critical for SMEs, because developing such systems is often too complex and costly.

Technology Solution - Modular, Low-Cost Tracking System and Design Approach

This technology solution comprises two parts:

  1. A systematic design framework was developed to guide the development of multi-purpose manufacturing tracking systems. The proposed framework aims to guide companies in identifying suitable tracking solutions, selecting appropriate sensing technologies and developing the system using a modular approach.

  2. Three module low-cost tracking systems were designed to measure locations/states, timing, and composition in a factory. These modular tracking systems can be integrated into the final tracking system.

The overall approach emphasises modularity, scalability and cost-effectiveness, making it particularly advantageous for SMEs by providing a roadmap to overcome common barriers in tracking system deployment.

Potential Impact

This solution has the potential to enable SMEs to develop their own tracking systems efficiently and on a low budget while adapting the system to their manufacturing processes. This will help SMEs increase operational efficiency, enhance supply chain visibility and improve decision-making processes.
